An evening of good food, fine drinks, good people, and digital direction talks, with Digital Evangelists

Last night John Haake, along with a few others, organized a dinner to bring a collective together. It was a collective of People that are living in the digital realm to one degree or another. John happens to work for Eyeblaster, and the event was sponsored by them, but that wasn’t what the collective was there too talk about. So, what were we there to talk about? The thing people keep talking about. This Digital thing. What ‘it’ is and how it is being approached. From a creative engagement to a big idea. The ideas that are not tailored for ‘digital’ only, but used it as a functional component and was enabled through digital channels and usage, were discussed as being a gateway to understanding ‘digital,’ and what has drawn attention to digital. The reduction in traditional media spending and the conversion of dollars into online is also a gateway that was discussed. But it is not just online that is digital; it’s tv’s, mobile devices, and electronics that can deliver content and experience.

This dinner was the beginning of a larger and longer dialog that is in the process of unfolding. The process of producing the content and the creative is an interesting area of discussion for people who are making creative, and the client perception is as well. The dinner collective of Digital Evangelists got into this as the conversation unfolded. The hurriedly nature and anxiousness that clients have now to make a ‘widget’ to make online content is getting in the way of making good work. Making good work can mean alot of things, but making good work for digital doesn’t always happen. Just like direct mail or printed posters or packaged goods, are not always made well, or designed in a nice package with a bow, and is that Bow really what’s right. That is the digital question. Are there just alot of bows on things now?

One of the outcomes of the dinner round table is to keep the conversation going.

  1. I think the most profound question of the evening was: do mashed potatoes and hollowed out apples really go together? Show me that photo evangelista.
