State of things

Filed under: Thoughts — Buckyben @ 8:48 pm

This year winter came alot later to the north east. Visiting the Adirondacks is really sobering. They have really been hit by the light winter. Global warming is really in the news, it is shunned by the right wing industrialists and global capitalists, but nonetheless, it is hard for many people to refuse but acknowledge that Mankind’s slash and burn style, our fossil burning of resources and our manipulation of the world around use is changing the worlds eco-system(s). My notes and sketches are delving deeper into the relationships of humans and our habits, and our deeper integration into our surroundings. working on some flow charts and will soon have some work to post.

The Migration of Preserve

Filed under: Thoughts — Buckyben @ 8:41 pm

That’s right. The migration of the content from the Preserve blog has been complete. Some formating may still occur, but it is mostly there, and More enhancements to the new site are continuing. Enjoying setting up the css, and working towards getting a solid string going.

Working on some new drawings as well and glad to have finally migrated my files off of the older and slower Lanset servers. More space and more flexibility now.

A drawing a day.. as I continue to work on my thesis prep, I need to
generate the content of the interactive experince. Hand drawing the
topic. I also will integrate photos and video, but feel hand drawings
are key to my daily experince and want an aethetic of this in the
project. It is also a way I am working things out in the idea arena.

Artist Statement: Benjamin J. Weisman: 2006buckyben1@yahoo.com/buckyben1@buckyben.com
Myrecent work has delved further in the direction of cultural and
symbolic meaning. My fascination and continued study of human evolution
and early human cultural and cosmological creation continue to
influence my art work. The roll of iconography and mixing media to
convey a message is becoming an integral aspect of my artistic process
and representations.
Much of my earlier work into sound and
video explored aspects of mediation with Judaica and Buddhist influence
(1). A resurgent interest in Jewish melodies and their influence on
memory led to the creation of the website, The Judaica Project.
Produced with the intention of being an ongoing cultural heritage
project, it couples the desire to preserve the melodies sung by a
generation on the cusp of passing as they age. This documentary website
is meant to share a perspective of a time period, and to preserve these
melodies for future generations. This piece integrates the mediums of
painting, hand drawn written text, sound and motion graphics.
The influence of religious symbolism is becoming more consistent as a force
in my art work, but so is the desire to share the current state of the
environment. I fear that the natural environment may soon change before
my eyes as my generation ages, with more people proliferating and
taxing our world’s eco-systems to their limits. This lead me to produce
the website Preserve (2), and to the development of the video piece,
Modern Landscape. This video piece takes the viewer on a journey across
3 locations: New York City, Jasper Canada, and Sarasota Florida. As the
video journey progresses, digital still effects arise, that serve as
snap shots of sorts that resolve at the climax. There is a structural
composition to the piece that is also strung together conceptually in
groupings of the relationships and with short poetic phrases exploring
the intricacies of the relationships. Modern environments, like NYC,
are a combination of natural ecosystems and man made environments. I
explore similarities that exist between the natural and man made
environments, integrating drawing, digital imaging, video and sound
compositions.
I have a strong interest in human evolution and supposing the
path that mankind has taken and continues to take as we
evolve culturally and physically. As I have been artistically exploring
the relationship of cosmology and religious experience with cultural
and physical evolution for my thesis project, a meshing has occurred
that is being expressed in my artwork. The piece Internal Cosmology is
has manifested a 6 armed figure, inspired by Buddhist imagery and my
personal challenge of exploring mankind’s recent lineage paths, is in a
way a representation of myself as I explore the lineages of mankind.
The integration of the natural world with man made urban landscapes is part
of the path we as a species are evolving into culturally. The piece
integrates video and 3D elements to create a relationship between
reality and an altered state of reality, perhaps running parallel with
each other, that is accessed visually through the eye of the meditator.
The moving background shapes are also pieces of our existence, as the
skulls are. The holding of the skulls represent pathways from our
lineage to the present. This 6 armed figure is spiritual in nature, but
is also a symbol of a flow chart, a connector of all these lineages of
mankind.
The interior of the room holds other symbols that
build further upon these relationships. A partial glass skull sits on
the table top symbolizing failed paths of mankind’s lineages. Several
tools and bones sit on the table top symbolizing different
technological stages these lineages would have known. The window is a
gateway between the modern world and the natural world, and is in turn
also symbolic of a window to the world, a looking out from within
ourselves.

I had been struggling with a focus, and am refining things. I keep going
back to- How did mankind come to understand the world, what role did
religion and language play, were they ways of understanding life, or
simply a means to an end in assisting food gathering, and
socialization, was that related to food gathering too? Also
reproducing. The connections are vast but here are some thoughts:
Once there was an ice age and the world was a wondrous place with a
diversity of life. The earth was a different place than today. With
more land exposed in some areas and much of the north and south were
covered in ice. It was at this time that our early ancestors began to
inhabit the earth. Around 700,000-200,000 years ago anatomically modern
man moved onto the earth. We inhabited that world with other Hominids,
similar to ourselves. Today we are the main survivor, with only a few
other living Hominids and Apes, like chimpanzees, Bonobos, Gorillas,
and Gibbons.
We number in the billions today, but for much of
our existence, we numbered far lower – closer t only a few hundred
thousand or maybe 2 million. We most likely lived in small groups of
people called Bands, that traveled over wide ranges of land. Yet we
were far more similar to ourselves today than we might think. People
were social animals then, and spoke language. People had learned
culture and were passing on knowledge to there successive generations.
I am interested in exploring the ways that mankind and our lineage have
tried to understand the world we inhabit, with explanations from
religion and science, language and culture; all inform mans conception
of existence.
——-notes———–Language and mundane objects can be used as tools to relate to what
sets people apart from other animals. Math, music, language – travel
with a figure trough time and lineage – using a mandalla as a model of
movement- language and info pushed out from behind the figure who is
changing and presenting objects and information – looking at the
relationship to religion and social organization and it’s relationship
to cultural and physical evolution – to religion was a way to explain
and try to understand existence and why people were understanding the
world and life different than other animals they shared life with – Why
am I drawn to religion as a way of evolving – is it an existential
evolution of understanding – I need to focus on the earlier state of
living as an environment and then move the experience to the next stage
– referencing the idea of culture that may have existed with that
lineage ( much in the scool of thought of Lewis, not binsford.)
–attempting to put the user into the experience of perceptiojn as the
lineage perceived life, but also how the conception of the world
unfolds – discuss the learning process –A mandalla as a user interface??– How do you move through time and space?
Importance of symbolism/language/physical evolution/cultural evolution/perception & understanding

How
can people say there is no global warming? When it is convenient to

change human activity to stop the earth from deteriorating and losing

Today
I recorded the violin segment of the modernLandscape sound track.
Thanks to Sarah Welker for her violin skills. We watched the video
while she played. This is the raw record with an initial edit, I will
further refine tomorrow and synch up to the video. I have also been
working on adding some graphical elements to the video, mostly layered
treatments of city and nature images togther and further pushing the
modernlandscape concept. The violin raw can be heard here: VIOLINRAW_2
and - modernlandscape revised video -
Thanks
for your thoughts Steve. It was good speaking with you earlier on the
phone. As I had mentioned earlier, I have furhter updated the movie and
refined and eliminated much of the violin, and added and enhanced other
sounds. I will be posting the reised version in the next 2 days. Thanks
for your thoughts,; as for venue for showing, I see the piece being in
galleries and if possible a museum. But I also think it is appropriate
as a meditative piece to put on the television, like ‘music scapes’ are
played on a stereo. I also plan to submit this piece to exhibitions
when completed.

I am working through some thoughts on human evolution and its relationship to social culture:
I
am working on some flow charts of words and issues I am finding
compelling or related to evolution and culture. I will soon post them
when I feel they are acceptable to share._____________________________________
How
does culture and language affect a species ability to survive? How does
a species’ culture and language(?) enable a species to proliferate as
opposed to going extinct?
What are the implications of culture on a species’ environment, and how does it change that environment?_____________________________________
Understanding where and what we come from will help us to understand how to help save the world from ourselves-
Why did Humans succeed where other species died off? What can we learn from this?
What
led to many lines of hominids to decline and go extinct? Could this
happen to modern man? Is loss of habit as a threat closer to affecting
mankind now that people have blossomed into a new level of occupancy
and consumption than ever before? Could mankind adapt to conditions
where we have lost our food supplies and water supplies; our raw
material resources? Would we go the way of the Neanderthal or Homo
Habilus?
Looking at past forms of the human lineage in a visual
and theoretical cultural sense will help me to address these issues. I
think I need to do some drawings and just play visually with this.
Perhaps 3d faces with deathly reflections of extinction? How to
represent. I need to create drawings and be playful in exploring these
relationships, maybe supper impose or juxtapose.
Then I keep
thinking about creating the content as one part of my thesis
then
creating a branded integrated promotional campaign that promotes the
content and is distributed, and document the process as a supplemental
to the content.

I’ve been in a rant lately when people ask me about the natural environment.
I get all worked up when people ask me why I am concerned. I am worried
for the natural physical world. Mankind is changing the world at an
alarming rate. I feel like I need to see as much of the pockets of the
natural world that are left- before it has been destroy, or changed
drastically by the effects of mankind on the environment. It should be
a mission of mine just traveling to world heritage sites and
experiencing them
but then am I damaging the sites I desire to
preserve
by achieving my desire to be there and see it before they are
gone I am part of a club of sorts, of people who want to preserve sites
in the natural world, but destroy them by wanting to experience them.
Is this a human problem, this intellectualizing of the natural world?
Do I destroy it by interacting with it? How is it different for people
to interact with an environment or destroy it or ravage it of edible
resources or drinking water or trees, than it is for a beaver to change
an environment to create its den?My concern for mankind’s effect on the
natural world is a train of thought I havebeen exploring in my recent
work. The video ‘Modern Landscape’ reflects the integration of city
landscapes with that of natural landscapes. As mankind becomes more
and more plentiful and takes advantage of and uses
up more of the Earths natural resources and space, are we entail
destroying the natural world. We are changing it for sue. Some would
say or the better. An air conditioner in every home. Electricity for
all! But polluted water for all, including every other form of life we
share on earth. Many people have become disconnected from the physical
natural world of our world, and insulated themselves from issues of
dirtiness, and of the world that surrounds us, and become veiled in
modern thought, and language and culture. It’s easy to justify massive
loss of habitat for any species but humans. But I fear mankind is becoming
very close to changing our habitat drastically now
for the first time since the last great Ice age. Many forms of life
didn’t fair well when harsh and drastic conditions helped to shape our
world around us in the recent geological past. People have a short
memory in our short lifespan compared to the lifespan of the planet
earth. It will most likely out live us. We should take note that many
species of homo, the human line and many before us on the lineage that
lead to us in the primate family tree, enjoyed only short spans of time
on this earth, while others integrate better and share existence with
the plentiful ness of life. But drastic conditions on earth can change
that. Loss of habitat, changing weather condition and loss of food and
water supply can devastate a population. People have faced such
conditions and been able to ‘adapt’ to these conditions. But many lines
of mankind’s lineage have failed at adaptation to harsh conditions
where modern man has succeeded. Why is this; and what can we learn from
it to ensure our further proliferation as a species? I intend to
further explore this issue.

My research into Human evolution is coming to a place where I feel
compelled to transform that research into something more concrete. My
art work has become more and more focused on nature and the natural
process and so has my desire to further understand the natural process
that has led to mankind’s current evolutionary state. Today I met with
Tim Portlock about my focus on Human Evolution in our Advanced Studio.
It was helpful to talk things through in reference to developing a
focal point and really thinking things through so that I will have as
many angles covered as I can think of to not just create a stronger
finished product, but protect myself and my work for a thesis project,
since the goal of refining my research on the evolutionary process of
mankind is to lead to an interactive piece of art work that informs a
user of their roots as a Being. In discussing my interest in Human evolution I realize that I am compelled by
the idea that there were recently in geological history and just 10 thousand years ago a distinctly different species of mankind that co-existed among us; Homo Floresiensis.
That is if you are a believer in evolution. There are many people who
don’t believe in evolution, Creationists, and some religious
fundamentals, who believe God snapped his fingers and the world began
just a few thousand years ago. So, I question myself, ‘do I need to
focus on this aspect?’ It is really not as interesting to me as the
root of my exploration which is what led modern, contemporary man to be
like we are? What is the path out species traveled to be who we are? It spans many species that all are apes. Yet some apes failed as Tim
and I discussed. This is an interesting aspect, to focus on, because
the lineage that led to use succeeded. Is it natural for a person to
empathize with these extinct lineages of the genus homo. Why
did some roots from the tree not continue to grow? What happened to
them? Did they have a rich culture? How developed were there brains?
Where they using Language like we do. What was there tool set made up
of? Did they hunt or were they scavengers? Did they have domesticated
dogs? When? Were they hunting or being hunted, or both? How is modern
thought towards race related to cross species perspectives of one
another since they most likely could not inter breed? These are
interesting questions, my curent focus is how to create a strucure for
a user to use to navigate and learn this content. Is one of the greatest mysteries of all time ‘where did all these extinct lineages of
mankind go to? But figuring it out may be a good model for an interface
or a way to progress through an interactive experience. What if a user
was to navigate through a structure that was built on a premise of the
user being a different evolutionary stage of the genus homo?
Maybe the user is a sort of detective. If they choose the correct raw
materials to make tools then they progress evolutionarily? I would need
to limit the types of choices available based on archeological evidence
of what may have been possible for that lineage stage of mankind. I may
also want to include video interviews of professional anthropologists
and archeologists to further explain the stages of evolution. I need to
further explore the possibilities of information architecture as I
refine some needed criteria to enable a user to learn about the extinct
lineage. Or maybe the user is in the future looking back at our lineage
as well?

That’s where I am moving now in my thought process. Any feedback/thoughts and the such are welcomed. Thanks-

Advanced Studio Proposal: Explorations of Human Evolution
Buckyben1@yahoo.com – Buckyben1@buckyben.comLast semester I began conducted my interdisciplinary research in hunter
gatherer societies and human evolution. This was also initial research
into my thesis, and preparation for work this semester in my advanced
studio. I plan to further develop my research into human evolution in
preparation for my thesis project- referencing my research I will
create illustrations and drawings (some of these drawings will draw on
my work in my 3d class), explore interactivity with these drawings,
compose flow charts and or information architecture for a website that
will display work produced. Many people have created online human evolution sites that draw on research illustrations photos and rich content and in some cases journalism- But few have created strong user interfaces and original content of illustrations with
interactivity in timelines and strong visual references and aesthetics.
For my thesis I plan to create a site that is aesthetically focused and
delivers rich and researched content- This advanced studio will be used
to focus my research, and refine my ideas into my thesis proposal. In
the process of conducting research, I plan to create sketches and off
shoot drawings and interactive studies further exploring the
possibilities of xml, html, and flash.Increasing my knowledge base in programming will enable me to have a larger array of
possibilities available to me when conducting my thesis project. This
advanced studio will provide me with an outlet to focus my research in
human evolution. Narrow down the topic further to have a precise area
of focus and perhaps even a perspective that will influence the way I
communicate and translate my research into the content of my thesis.

I will also continue to complete 2 projects I began last semester that I
believe can be further developed. One is the sound track to Modern Landscape, and other is to add additional Hebrew writing of prayers to

Not to seem bleak, or pesimmistic, but this new world report abou the state
of the worlds eco-systems and natures economy is pretty scary. People
have been theorizing for a while what would happen if we fished all the
fih in the seas and hunted all the wild animals and domesticated what
was left. Bird flu, lack of resources, relase of diseases from forrests
that kept them localized. More pollution in the atmosphere, logging all
he trees away
. man, what is goin on with the world. Peopl are out of
balance, seeingshort term and not lon term. Where are we headed? The report says we are heading into a not so picturesque immediate future
in the short term and that most of the worlds eco-systems are beyond
repair. I can’t help but get mad at big business and the progressive

but,
surprise, the war on drugs has a dangerous side effect— The killer
spray for the plants that is dropped is also killing the great forests

What is the environment worth anyway.
It’s just trees and animals and plants, we can always replace them
but
not really. Especially if it lives in a remote area that has yet to be

plants to stop the drug trade or to get some new timber, it might also

Is global warming causing stronger hurricanes? Some may argue this to be
true. It is worth exploring. But what is paramount as a result of
Katrina is the lesson that building levees and stopping mother natures
natural process can have devastating results. Removing natural flood

to a long term occupation of a population in a regional area, not to
mention destructive to an eco-system. At least a few Dolphins have been

The BBC has a new article that addresses the effects of climate change by
pre-industrial man-kind. Many people tend to discount the ability or
pre-industrial mankind, yet this article shows that Global warming is
an old hat trip for people, even pre-industrial people.

I wonder how much we are affecting the greenhouse effect nowadays, with
heavy forest burning in parts of the world- some of the last large
forests at that!! And let’s not forget the burning of fossil fuels like
crazy. But alas, not much more damage of these 2 efects will persisit,
for almost all large forests are gone, and the fossil fuels are quickly
disappearing

My wife’s family had planned a trip to Sarasota Florida for about a year.
My mother-in-law was determined to stay at this beautiful time share
located on Longboat Key on the Gulf coast of Florida. On Thursday
August 25th we learned from watching the news that the storm was now a
hurricane and had a chance of striking Sarasota where we were staying.
We immediately called the airport about our options for getting out of
the area. Our planned flight was for that weekend on Saturday, when the
storm would strike Sarasota. Well, the storm went further south of us
and Sarasota was untouched. This further south track is part of what
caused the storm to gain such strength when it hit New Orleans. It is
very unfortunate that the storm has caused so much destruction, but
without the dredging and environmental manipulation that man caused in
the region of New Orleans and Mississippi, the damage would have been
far less.

Man-kind thinks they can do what they like to the
environment and the environment will take care of itself. This is true
to an extent, and even in the case of Katrina. The environment has
cleansed the area of the virus of man some would say. Others would say
this storm is Gods will. I would choose to say that mankind needs to be
careful and respectful of the environment we have, and recognize the
consequences of what we do to it, and how we can best protect it.
Preventing natural flooding which brings sediments to stabilize land
has been a practice that has become widespread all over the world
today. This flooding helps to enrich the land from sediments with
nutrients to reinforcing the land structure.

People the world
over are donating to organizations to help the refugees. Which is
terrific and commendable, yet what about the environment? What of all
the oil spills? What of all the dead bodies? What about the polluted
Gulf? How many fish will die; how long will the shell fish industry be
shutdown from polluted shellfish. How will these and other factors
affect the eco-system in the region? Will the water supply be drinkable?

Mankind was living in the Americas like 40,000 ago. The Eurocentric school of
thought has long pushed the theory that mankind first showed up in the
Americas only 12,000 years ago. Foot prints were found that prove the
dating to be far older then previously accepted
by Europeans; who like
to think that everything started in Europe. But seriously, this is
great stuff. To think that we now have evidence of mankind in the
Americas from 40,000 years ago is great. It makes me wonder how long
ago mankind really can to the Americas? Probably longer ago than we
think. Just like mankind was far more advanced technological then we
think of them being at 100,000 years ago. I can’t wait for that

Many people have known for sometime now that pollution and emissions are
truly and quickly affecting our environment and eco-systems world wide.
Well, evidence shows that mankind needs to curb our emissions or else
it will drastically affect our oceans and the life in it and in turn
any life that feeds off it. Our eco-systems are on the verge of
changing forever.

The ties of big business and governments
the world over are still so dependent and incestuous with the oil, and
coal industries. Our natural resources are not just being depleted, but
being wasted. Once they are gone, they are gone. While there are all
these new technologies that work as good and better than oil, still no
changes are to be seen in the short term. The government
representatives are so entrenched with oil and the companies that own
there drilling and distribution, that switching to Hydrogen technology,
that works of water, seems far off still. Our only chance in the short
term seems to be the rising oil prices, which may make it too pricey
for even the current situation to continue. When it costs more to fill
your car up with gas then it does to fly to Florida on a Jet blue sale,
you know something is strange-

Here’s an interesting story looking at new studies that show that Heavy
Fertilizer Use May Transform Lakes for Centuries. Not much of a
surprise if you have been paying attention to where all that fertilizer
has been going —into our water supply! People now know or should I say
have re-learned that surrounding your farmland with trees prevents
water runoff and helps retain the water for the crops, but still
mainstream farming has yet to institute such practices and reduce the
use of man made fertilizers– could it be GREED yet again? Could it be
those lobbyists who produce the fertilizers yet again manipulating out
Congress? Most likely. Fossil fuels and fertilizers are changing our
planet, and as mankind is now learning, the changes have already begun.

Well, I am back in NYC from the Canadian Rockies. The weather there was
amazing– 70’s and 80’s in the Fahrenheit scale and 26-31 in the
Celsius. The sunsets were at 10:30pm-11:00pm depending on how clear the
sky was. And let’s not forget the hiking. We did great hikes in the
Mountains of Alberta and British Columbia.
The wildlife was all over. We were surprised to find a pack of wolves our first day
there and spotted a female moose and big horn sheep. As out days passed
by we also spotted mountain goats, lots of deer, elk, black bears and
grizzly bears. Of course I got as much video footage of them as I
could. Lots of photos of the landscape and lots of video of the flowing
waterways we encountered; from rivers and streams to lakes and ponds. I
was struck by the clarity and the abundance of the water. We were there
so early in the season that we were hiking on snow on some hikes. A few
lakes were still frozen, but were beautiful with all the snow and ice
in and around it.
We spotted some fish swimming upstream one
day hiking to Lake Rawson in the Kananaskis country. It’s one of the
other Canadian National parks around Banff. It is not nearly as
developed there as it is in Banff. This lake was still ice covered with
a stream trickling along near the trail that leads to it. Remote and
still snow covered at this time of year, this hike offered a marvelous
experience. Jasper is also much more rural and undeveloped than Banff.
Even though Kananaskis Country was logged many years ago, much of the
wilderness has now returned to the region and so has the wildlife.
Banff is nice, but it is more like a theme park than a
wildlife/landscape preserve.
The notoriety has caught up with
this region. Jasper has not yet been affected like Banff. The town site
of Banff, which resides in the Park itself, has high end shopping and
restaurants that cater to the older population and the few who can
afford these Rocky Mountain luxuries. Criticisms aside, the area still
contains natural beauty, but you need to hike to it. The famous areas
here like Lake Louise and the town site has become a Disneyland
atmosphere. A good hike lets you escape these man-made nature areas and
allows you to find the reason why people were initially drawn to this
region.
The hike in British Columbia, or BC, of Mt. Robson was
amazing. It is about 21 miles past beautiful mountain peaks still snow
capped and 2 lakes to a glacier, that only hikers can get to, which
keeps it special and prevents the car only tourists from terraforming
the natural beauty.
I am in the process of reviewing the footage of the trip and plan to develop a piece highlighting the region in the fall. I am sure I will return to the area in the future to enjoy the natural wilderness, and this time I will know more about how to
avoid the overly touristy areas and the terraformed theme park that
also resides there.

by Administrator Monday May 23, 2005
Well, the semester is winding down, and I am prepping for a trip to Canada,
to visit Jasper and Banff and do some heavy hiking and videography for
an upcoming study. We’re hoping to spot some bears and wolves. The
weather may turn out to be rainy, but getting out of NYC and into the
Wilderness, by comparison, will be wonderful.
